Many bacteria have one or more flagella attached to the outside to help them move. Some bacteria also have hairlike structures called pili that help them attach to each other and to the host.

The interior is filled with a liquid called cytoplasm. It contains enzymes that help in digestion and building parts, storage bodies called inclusions, nutrients, RNA, and DNA. Within a bacterium’s nucleoid is a single circular chromosome. The cytoplasm may also contain smaller DNA bits called plasmids, which often carry genes that fight antibiotics.
